Pon Bike Performance warehouse move
The new Pon Bike Performance GmbH (PBP) in Mainz, Germany has been live for further development of their brands in Europe since January 1, 2021. Those brands include Cervélo, Santa Cruz, Reserve (carbon wheels) and Juliana. The transition of the brands from Derby Cycle to Pon Bike Performance began in the second half of 2020. Although part of the bike assembly process will continue to take place at Derby Cycle in Cloppenburg, Germany for the time being, part of the operation has already moved to the new site in Mainz. The service and guarantee processes and their associated warehouse were relocated in December 2020. In doing so, the LSC provided support to a project team from Pon Bike Performance and a Pon Management trainee.
Warehouse layout
In addition to a physical move, it was also necessary to set up and organize a fully functional warehouse. In die alte Waggonfabrik in Mainz, an area of approximately 450 m2 was temporarily available as a guarantee warehouse. The empty space needed to be made suitable for the new operation. For this purpose, a design for the interior was drawn up, shelf material was purchased, workstations were fitted, electricity and network connections were installed and a forklift was leased.
Processes and systems
In parallel, Pon Bike Performance also began implementing a new ERP: Oracle NetSuite. The logistics processes and associated administrative processes had to be set up and worked out. Together with the ERP project leader from the USA and Plative, the ERP supplier from Toronto, the ERP was set up and the processes were worked out and tested.
Transport procurement
Transport contracts were concluded for outgoing shipments with various haulers. Rates and service agreements were established for regular and urgent shipments, batteries and bikes. Software is also going to be used to select carriers and register shipments with the various haulers.
Physical relocation
The relocation of over 1,500 items was arranged, as well as associated processes, resources and administration together with Pon Bike Performance and Derby Cycle. All items were then counted and packed by Derby Cycle in order to be transported to Mainz in three trailers. There, in two days, all items were received by the combined project team and Pon Bike Performance employees, counted again and arranged in Pon Bike Performance’s new guarantee warehouse.
Result
Realizing the functional warehouse within three months was the result of successful collaboration between the LSC, Pon Bike Performance and Derby Cycle. For the LSC, it was an enjoyable, varied assignment and a fun challenge.
