Expanding the collaboration between Swapfiets and PL

We wrote about this before. Thanks to the great cooperation between Pon Logistics and Swapfiets, the latter is able to focus completely on its core business. And it’s doing so successfully! Swapfiets has been able to expand its service significantly in recent years.

This year, we started with the warehousing and storage of Swapfiets parts and their distribution from the Pon Logistics branch in Veenendaal to the various Swapfiets locations throughout Europe. This summer, in advance of the new academic year, over 11,000 Swapfiets bicycles were transported to 17 different student towns with 66 transports in 8 weeks’ time. Another 10,000 bicycles were received and stored in December. These will be delivered to the various Swapfiets locations in the first quarter of 2019. At the moment, there are still 70 pallets with a range of bicycle parts stored in the warehouse. This number is sure to grow over the coming years.

Delivery of up to 100,000 bicycles from Barneveld

Like in previous years, storage and distribution of Swapfiets bicycles is planned for 2019 as well. At the same time, Pon Logistics and Swapfiets employees are working on a new, long-term project; storing at least 51,000 and up to 100,000 Swapfiets bicycles and distributing them from Pon Logistics Barneveld to various student towns. The focus of the project is on loading and unloading these bicycles ergonomically.

Double-stack loading

That is a challenge, since double-stack loading is required, but there are no loading and unloading docks available when loading and unloading. A possible solution would be the use of customized closed car trailers from Smink Transport, part of the Koopman Logistics Group. Together with them, we are investigating if it is possible to adapt the trailer in such a way that it would be suitable for transporting cars and bikes as well as other Pon products, such as wheel sets.

Interface between systems

Work is also being done on an interface between the IT system of Swapfiets and Pon Logistics’ WMS. It is expected that this will be completed during the first quarter of this year. We will of course keep you up to date about the progress of this project.
